Whispers
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Zebra Books (Mass Market) (October, 1999)
Author: Lisa Jackson
Average review score:

intriguing...
This book was pretty involved and very intriguing. Each of the sister's lives, not to mention all the other characters, really kept me in suspense. The fued between the Taggerts and the Hollands was interesting. The only reason I can't rate this book higher is because the sex gets to be too much. Everyone is constantly having sex and the graphic nature of it gets to be tedious and boring. Each encounter is the same and I found myself skimming the sex parts to get to the meat of the story. I mean, who cares? I enjoy a good mystery and this story has murder, suspense, romance, the works, but the sex is way overdone. This is the second Lisa Jackson book I have read and it seems as though she tries too hard to throw that in when in reality it is not necessary for a good story. Leaving a little to the imagination is a good thing sometimes.

A complex tale of lies and betrayal....
Claire Holland has come home to Oregan after her marriage crumbles. After a summons from her father, Claire returns to find out that the truth about one night sixteen long years ago is finally going to come out. Not only that, but Claire has her own truth to deal with, including the boy whom she finally realized she loved, Kane Moran. After one passion filled night, Kane left town to join the army and Claire never saw him again.

Miranda Holland has her own secrets to keep, ones that she will guard religously. Only two people beside herself know what happened on the night Harley Taggert was killed. After getting pregnant by the boy she loved, Miranda thought she had it all. Although she knew she would have to put her career on hold, it was worth it to have the man she loved and a the baby that they made together. Now all the lies are about to come out and Miranda can only wait for the fall out.

Tessa Holland has been fighting her own demons for all the years that Miranda lied for her. Never being the strong one like Miranda, nor the smart one like Claire, Tessa knew she came up short. Messing up her life at an early age cost her much, but she knew that when all the truth came out, she would be the one at fault.

Kane Moran fell for Claire fast. It was a classic case of the princess and the peasant, but he only now realizes that she felt more than pity for him. Never having much, Kane knew that one day he would amount to something, and when he did, Dutch Holland, father to the three Holland girls, would pay for messing up his life. And it starts with writing the book of the Holland family, to stop Dutch from becoming govenor. Kane soon realizes that his love for Claire means more to him than any fame or revenge and all he can do is protect her and her family as best as he can.

Whispers is a very complex tale of so many lies that I don't know how the reader can keep track of them! These four characters will tug on your heartstrings and the other characters involved will make you sick. In her classic tale of romance and suspense, Lisa Jackson doesn't dissapoint!

Great Book!
This book has it all: mystery, suspense, romance.... I enjoyed reading it. I'd also reccommend Lisa Jackson's book Treasures. I haven't read any of her other books yet, but I am planning to. If you like the romance/suspense stories penned by Nora Roberts, you'll like Lisa Jackson.

Why: The Biography of John Carlos With Cd Jackson, Jr.
Published in Paperback by Milligan Books (November, 2000)
Authors: CD, Jr. Jackson, John Carlos, and C. D. Jackson
Average review score:

John Carlos' story is candid, blunt and inspirational.
This book sets the record straight on the contributions of one of history's least understood icons. Author C.D. Jackson, Jr. has captured the "story behind the story" of John Carlos, one of the fastest humans in track and field history. The book tells the John Carlos story from his humble beginnings in Harlem, NY to the racism his family endured while running track in 1960's Texas. He chronicles his journey to San Jose, California and his rise to multiple World Records and an Olympic Bronze Medal. You will see a very complex and powerful "thinker" with a mind of his own. He used his "mind" to cripple and destroy his competition.

John's personal tragedies, his "bravado", his athletic rivalries and his bold statements on human rights are merely stepping stones to uncovering John's personal spirit. This book will tell the good, the bad and the controversial "ugly" side of this complex and prolific giant of sport and the struggle for human rights.

His athletic accomplishments go far beyond the Olympic podium of Mexico City in 1968. John Carlos triumphed over the ostracism he and Tommie Smith received in Mexico City, and his own personal battle with dsylexia to set or tie 4 World Records and earn the title of World's Fastest Human in 1969 & 1970. John went on to earn four All-American honors and become NCAA 60yd, 100yd, 220yd and 440yd Relay champion while at San Jose State University.

This book also relates to John's ability to maintain his fighting spirit through the deaths of his father, wife and son.

This book is a must read, you will learn what makes John Carlos "think" like no other man you will ever meet. John Carlos loves people and C.D. Jackson, Jr. captures his most entertaining qualities.

The riveting biography of John Carlos
Why? is the riveting biography of John Carlos, the Black American who in the October 16, 1968 Olympics held in Mexico won the bronze medal for the 200-meter race and then, with Tommy Smith, his Black American teammate who had one the gold medal for the same event, raised on black-gloved fist in silent protest. This engaging and superbly presented biography explores the childhood events that led john to this moment of world-wide attention -- and the serious consequences that followed it. Here is a true-life story of triumph, perseverance, and principle that is highly recommended reading for students of Olympic sports history, black studies, and the fight against racism in all the arenas of life, both on and off the field.

Triumph Over Tragedy
The experiences that shaped John Carlos are made vivid by the CD Jackson biography titled "Why?" It brought to life the inner struggles he experienced as a young athlete who had to struggle with both racism and a learning disorder. His strength of character and strong beliefs in fairness and justice prevailed over his desire for personal success. This same strength sustained him in his later life when personal tragedy struck him repeatedly. It is a book whose message will not be forgotten.

X-Men: Visionaries
Published in Paperback by Marvel Books (October, 1998)
Authors: Chris Claremont, John Byrne, Dave Cockrum, Allen Milgrom, Barry Windsor-Smith, Jackson Guice, Kyle Baker, Alan Davis, Jim Lee, and Scott Williams
Average review score:

Great book, but not an ideal intro
This is a really fun little graphic novel, loaded with great artwork and a decent storyline. I wouldn't recommend it as a first-time read for anyone unfamiliar with the X-Men - taken out of context from the overall series - it might be a somewhat confusing introduction. But for those who know the characters and have a general idea of what is going on, believe me, this one delivers the goods.

In the past, I have generally hated the X-Men's adventures in the Savage Land, or whenever they would go to outer space or get into really super sci-fi type situations. I always felt the X-Men stories worked much better when they were grounded in very normal, down-to-earth settings, because it made the X-Men themselves stand out and seem that much weirder. But this book is an exception to the rule. It's a big, crazy, larger-than-life adventure, part of which takes place in the prehistoric Savage Land, and part of which gets hyper technological, and it works out OK.

The artwork is tough and gritty. Jim Lee draws a mean, shadowy, ugly Wolverine who kills lots of villains and looks like he needs to take a shower very badly.

And Lee's women - whoa. This book contains more gratuitous cheescake shots than any X-Men graphic novel I've seen, but it's all very pleasing to the eye. Especially the scenes with Rogue, whose bare skin can kill anyone she touches and thus, understandably, was always the one major female character who kept herself completely covered at all times. This was the first storyline in the series where they finally drew her as a scantily-clad, sexy heroine. A real treat for male Rogue-fans who'd been reading the series patiently for years.

This storyline also chronicles the transformation of innocent young Psylocke into a mature woman trained in the art of Ninjitsu, and she becomes an ultra-violent, sexy bad girl. And then there are cameo appearances by other Marvel superheroes, namely Captain America (from the Avengers series) and The Black Widow (from the Daredevil series). All in all, it's a satisfying, action-packed, well-drawn, crowd-pleasing comic book in trade-paperback format.

Ancient Mystery Cults (Carl Newell Jackson Lectures)
Published in Paperback by Harvard Univ Pr (October, 1989)
Author: Walter Burkert
Average review score:

A great book, but one side of an argument
Walter Burkert is one of the greatest scholars of the twentieth century in the field of ancient Greek religion, and this contribution is an excellent book which, for the most part, lives up to such a standard. I recommend it to any and all students of Greek religion who are looking to expand their knowledge of the particulars of mystery cults and what they were all about. I do, however, have reservations about recommending it as an overview or introductory work for laymen or students just getting interested in the subject. Burkert's methodology, while a great improvement over the "myth and ritual" debates which dominated earlier scholarship, is very much oriented in a psychological viewpoint which sees ancient mystery religion as somehow fundamentally less psychologically satisfying than religions like Christianity ("confessional" religions). In every chapter he tries to make the point that these cults were nothing like early confessional religions like Christianity because he is responding to another faction of scholars who tried to assimilate the two, but, unfortunately, in doing so Burkert makes a number of misleading (and, some would say, wrong) arguments about the nature of mystery religion and the mentality of its devotees. It is for these reasons that I recommend this book highly to someone who already knows enough to recognize when Burkert is making controversial statements and would not take him at face value.

Lucid ideas about ancient mystery cults.
I recommend this book as an introduction for everybody who is interested in this daunting subject. Daunting, because it was forbidden for the initiated to speak about the mystery. Nearly everything we know (besides artwork - Athens - architectural sites) came to us indirectly (e.g. the formidable play 'Bakchai' by Euripides).
Furthermore, all sanctuaries were destroyed after the imperial decrees (391/392) of Theodosius the Great prohibiting all pagan cults.
The author analyses 5 mystery cults : Eleusis, Meter, Isis, Mithras, and the Dionysian and Bacchian mysteries.
As we can learn from the work of Karl Kerenyi, the influence of Eleusis on Christianity should not be underestimated. Apparently, through the myth of Demeter/Persephone, the initiated were 'shown' that there was life after death. Plato was initiated (as nearly all Roman emperors) and as Hannah Ahrendt tells us in her book 'The origins of Totalitarianism', Plato must be considered as one of the fathers of the Christian creed.
For the mysteries of Mithras, I recommend the work of J. Vermaseren.

As Burkert states, most of the mysteries were expensive clubs and the experience was purely individual. That is the reason why they disappeared so rapidly: they lacked any lasting organization as the Christian Church. Another reason for Burkert was the inclusion of the family as the basic unit of piety in Christianity. The Church got the upper hand for demographic reasons.
Contrary to Burkert, we know from the work of Kerenyi on Eleusis that the taking of drugs (the kykeon) was important (it was taken after a longer period of fasting).
Burkert gives us a very good summary indeed.

Applied Combinatorics With Problem Solving
Published in Hardcover by Addison-Wesley Pub Co (January, 1990)
Authors: Dmitri Thoro and Bradley W. Jackson
Average review score:

A little gem
One of most common problems with most math textbooks is the excess of inappropriate details. The basic format of this book is concise presentation of the essentials followed by diverse problems. Instead of giving an imcomplete introduction to the more advanced ideas like some authors do Jackson and Thoro tell you where to find them in other books at the end of every section. This book is proof that it doesn't take a famous mathematician to write a good book.

Excellent!
This is a very clear book, easy to read. It is a very enjoyable.

Appointment With F.E.A.R. (Fighting Fantasy, No 17)
Published in Paperback by Dell Pub Co (September, 1986)
Authors: Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone
Average review score:

Very good! Full of twists and turns to challenge the mind.
This book isn't your typical roleplaying adventure. It has actual puzzles in the story for you to tackle and you get to choose your super power. A must read for role playing fans.

A unique book in the Fighting Fantasy series
Appointment With Fear differs from your ordinary Fighting Fantasy adventure. Here, you take on the role of the Silver Crusader, a superhero dedicated to ridding evil. You are based in Titan City, a place teeming with evil villains, some as powerful as yourself. Your goal in this adventure is to locate the secret meeting of the evil FEAR organization and capture its leader, Vladimir Utoshki, better known as the Titanium Cyborg. The book plays like your typical superhero adventure, and will delight fans of the genre. The book is very replayable too, in that you are allowed to choose your superpower. You can choose between having super strengh, psi abilities, the ability to shoot energy from your fingertips, or be able to create high tech gadgets that will get you out of tight situations. After reading the book with one of these abilities, you can reread it and choose another. The adventure is spent trying to gain clues as to the whereabouts of FEAR's secret meeting, and is a little on the difficult side. The author (Steve Jacson) also introduces a HERO point system. For performing various heroic feats, you can gain HERO points, but they are merely a guide as to how well you have done in the adventure. Your main goal is to defeat FEAR. All in all, if you are a fan of superheros or mysteries, this book will not dissapoint.
